Notes on retrofitting factory rear-LEDs to Audi A4 B8/A5/S5 (by LoCal)

13.1.2009 (updated 15.1.2010) - A fellow Audi enthusiast LoCal sent in this contribution.
Original Audi S5 (as well as A5) shipped with traditional tail/rear lights, but starting around November 2008 the S5 (and the A5 Cabriolet) ship with LED rear-lights. Mechanically these fit into existing A5/S5 cars, but there are some other issues regarding retrofitting that are at the time of writing being discussed online.

Here are some of the threads to follow (there are also some diagrams/pictures in the first thread):

8T0 945 096 B outer right, 8T0 945 094 A inner right
New required connectors: 1J0 973 714 and 3B0 972 724

Kufatec is preparing a retrofit kit (results expected around February 2009):

The current, at the time of writing, concensus is that mechanically the regular rear-lights are easy enough to replace and the process can be found in the user manual, and with the use of adapters available from e.g. Kufatec, plugging in the new light fixtures is easy too. There might be the need for some additional VAG COM coding as well, as has been the case in other factory rear-LED retrofits (e.g. Audi A6 Avant).

The fourth step may be the tricky one, Kufatec and other sources point to the need for replacing the control unit of central electronics. What (or all?) model-years require this change and how extensive a process its replacement and recoding is, remains to be seen.
